Nearly a year has passed since Motorola introduced the Edge X30, a device that the company released globally in January as the Edge 30 Pro with a few minor tweaks. Now, TENAA, a Chinese regulatory body, appears to have certified its successor, the Edge X40. While it should come as no surprise to learn that the Edge X40 contains more powerful hardware than its predecessor, Motorola has updated its design language too.
To recap, the Edge X30 sports a design that Motorola has used across entry-level and mid-range smartphones released throughout this year. For example, the Moto E32 and Moto G82 borrow heavily from the Edge X30, itself a minor revision of the Edge 20’s overall design. By contrast, the apparent Edge X40 has a revised camera housing, as well as an overhauled display. Specifically, the unreleased design has a squircle camera housing that looks much thicker than the one found in the Edge X30.
Additionally, the back panel has a more muted tone and finish to it. Moreover, a second device image shows a curved display rather than the flat displays found in recent Motorola flagships. Purportedly, the Edge X40 will launch later this year with a 165 Hz OLED display, up to 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and even the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Unfortunately, people outside China will have to wait until early 2023 before they can purchase the Edge X40, presumably as the Edge 40 Pro.
