The City of Dearborn will soon be offering Narcan in at least two vending machines across the city.
The Dearborn Department of Public Health will stock vending machines with Narcan, an opioid-reversal medication, to increase access to the public as the number of overdoses continue to climb locally and across the nation.
So far the city had 396 units of Narcan, provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, at no cost to the city.
The MDHHS provided the doses through the Naloxone Standing Order (Narcan is a name brand for the drug Naloxone).
Under that standing order, the drug can be dispensed without a prescription.
The Department of Public Health got the vending machines donated from the Islamic Center of Detroit.
Dearborn Director of Public Health Ali Abazeed said he hopes to save lives with this new program.
“Dearborn is not immune from the opioid epidemic. Narcan is a proven life saver in overdose situations and increasing access to the Dearborn community is vital to saving lives. Our effort includes targeted outreach and support to get residents the help they need.”
Upon City Council approval, The vending machines will be placed on City property at the Dearborn Train Station at 21201 Michigan Avenue, and a second location to be determined at a later point by the administration.
The exact number of Dearborn residents with opioid use disorders is unknown. However, Wayne County has one of the highest opioid deaths rates in the state, and deaths have been increasing exponentially in the last 20 years
