The law school class of 2022 graduated into a strong entry-level hiring market, landing legal jobs at a higher rate than their predecessors in 2021 and 2019, according to new figures from the American Bar Association. Nearly 78% of last year’s new juris doctors found jobs that require bar passage within 10 months of leaving campus—up from about 76% among the class of 2021. But with a drop in demand and some firms laying off associates, what could this mean for the class of 2023?

Judge in Donald Trump rape case warns against inciteful statements

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, the judge in former President Donald Trump’s rape case, ordered lawyers at the start of a civil trial on Tuesday to keep their clients and witnesses from making public statements that could lead to violence. Kaplan admonished them before seating nine jurors who will weigh whether Trump raped former Elle magazine advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s – and defamed her by denying it happened. Read more about Day One.

Artificial intelligence poised to hinder, not help, access to justice

The artificial intelligence arms race in large law firms has picked up significant steam since the advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The technology also has been touted for its potential to help close gaps in access-to-justice for marginalized groups. But the trajectory of the industry is simply not geared toward the interests of underserved populations, columnist Hassan Kanu writes, noting the economic disincentives in serving those groups and the potential for the technology to entrench, or even exacerbate, existing disparities.
