Back for 2022 in all its interactive glory, the Good Food & Wine Show is celebrating its 21st instalment with a wide-ranging culinary celebration. Kicking off in Melbourne on June 3 and Sydney on June 24 (before moving on to other cities later in the year) the event will welcome more than 220 Australian producers to host masterclasses, tastings and pop-up shops.
Here are some picks to help jumpstart your tasting adventure.
The Kitchen by Harris Scarfe
Want to watch Master Chef favourite Brendan Pang make plant-based dumplings? Or streamline your home entertaining approach with My Kitchen Rules winner Sammy Jakubiak? A bunch of celebrity chefs will offer diverse masterclasses and live cooking demos across the weekend, with plenty of recipes and advice to apply at home. Silvia Colloca and Miguel Maestre will dive into their Italian and Spanish roots, respectively, while Sydney chef Matt Moran from North Bondi Fish and will share some family favourite dishes.
An interactive class by The Cook Up’s Adam Liaw will demonstrate how taste has changed the world, in partnership with his new Audible podcast of the same name. The session will dive into mastering the five basic tastes – salt, sweet, sour, bitter and umami. All of the events are free.
Riedel Drinks Lab
Whatever your level of knowledge, wine columnist Nick Ryan is hosting an interactive series of tastings in the Riedel Drinks Lab to help expand your understanding of vino, whether it’s an exploration of far-flung wine varietals or a tasting of the unusual varietals from Margaret River (when there’s a class called ‘Is it really better to be single?’ you know this won’t be a stuffy affair). Sessions focus on everything from “chardonnay in all its glory” and the importance of texture, to a spotlight on women in winemaking. All of Ryan’s classes are free (and there’s seven sessions a day) but you’ll need to arrive early to guarantee a spot.
Eat Local Pop-Up series
At both Melbourne and Sydney events, you’ll be able to get a sampling of delicacies from local restaurants. In Melbourne, Tonka and Coda’s Adam D’Sylva will be serving up fried chicken burgers and fancy fried chicken and chips, Pinchy’s will be slinging Alaska King Crab rolls, Lobster Rolls and truffle fries among other delights, and 400 Gradi will be serving tomato-drenched meatballs and pizza. In Sydney, you’ll be able to catch Sammy Jakubiak’s Frank’s Deli’s Reuben Sandwich and Burnt Basque Cheesecake alongside Tapavino’s Txistorra hot dog and Chocolate Terrine.
Glenfiddich Whisky Wanderer
This boozy masterclass will be held in a 1972 vintage Leyland bus converted into a premium whisky lounge on wheels. The iconic Scottish label is offering samplings of its 12-year-old single malt along with a bunch of food pairing, cheese pairing and whisky consultation sessions on its open-air top deck. Elsewhere, Monkey Shoulder’s bright orange mixing truck is making an appearance, alongside the Hendrick’s Airstream Gin Bar.
Smelly Cheese Project
Curated by the beloved Adelaide Central Market Smelly Cheese Shop, the Smelly Cheese Project highlights the entire sensory experience of tasting artisanal cheese. You can learn about the wider cheesemaking process and the unique stories behind specific cheeses, with the shop’s resident expert Valérie Henbest guiding you along the way. Henbest is also hosting a range of masterclasses that delve into the world’s greatest cheeses and how to pair cheese with everything from champagne to chocolate. If you’re after something a bit less smelly, there is also the Cheese Lane nearby.
Good Food & Wine Melbourne runs from June 3 to 5. Good Food & Wine Sydney runs from June 24 to 26. Tickets here.
