Tear-Mending Workshops Preserve the Future of Canvas Paintings
Dental probes. Suture materials. A microscope equipped for photographic recording. These were just some of the specialized instruments provided to conservator Kerstin Khalife, a freelance conservator for the Sursock Museum and head of conservation of the Beirut Museum of Art, as part of a Getty-funded conservation workshop in tear mending. After the 2020 port explosion in Beirut left numerous artworks glass-riddled and torn, Khalife sought expert insights to prepare her to treat the destroyed collections. Find out how the Conserving Canvas initiative is training conservators like Khalife around the world in cutting-edge and traditional techniques that enable the next generation of cultural heritage professionals to care for paintings on canvas damaged by disasters or human conflicts.

Getty Prize Grant Awarded to Arts for Healing and Justice Network
2024 Getty Prize winner artist Mark Bradford has selected Arts for Healing and Justice Network (AHJN) as the recipient of the $500,000 Getty Prize grant. AHJN works with community-based arts education organizations that serve system-impacted youth in LA to build resiliency and wellness, eliminate recidivism, and center arts as a change strategy for young people, communities, and systems. “With the Getty Prize, I am proud to support the important work AHJN is doing to transform young people’s lives through the power of arts education and look forward to seeing everything they will be able to accomplish as a result of this generous grant,” says Bradford. Both AHJN and Bradford will be celebrated at the annual Getty Prize dinner on May 13, 2024, at the Getty Center.
