Some ex-Midas staff have been taken on as work on two seafront hotels begins again
Work has started again on Paignton’s new sea front hotels after another company stepped in after the demise of the Midas group, with some workers who were left in the lurch re-employed.
The project to build two hotels for the Singapore-based Fragrance Group had stalled after the collapse of Midas, which entered administration in January blaming a toxic cocktail of Covid, inflation and cashflow problems.
Signs with the name of the new builder, Brady Construction Services, have now appeared on hoardings surrounding the construction sites, and work is under way again.
The two hotels – on the sites of the former Park Hotel and Lighthouse bar – were part of a £40 million package of work being undertaken by Midas in Torbay when the company went under at the end of January.
Midas was also building an £11m Premier Inn, commissioned by Torbay Council, at the Terrace in Torquay.
Martin Rogers, managing director of the Global Hotels and Leisure Consultancy, who is overseeing the Paignton project, confirmed: “Brady Construction was appointed very shortly after Midas went bust. We re-employed a few Midas staff on site and have started work again.”
However, he said it was too early to confirm any revised completion dates.
A 160-bed Mercure Hotel on the site of the old Park Hotel had originally been expected to open last month, followed later this year by a three-star Ibis Styles hotel next door.
