PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. will embark on his first presidential trip abroad – a two-country, four-day state-visit to Indonesia and Singapore – starting this Sunday, September 4.
The President will go on a state visit to Indonesia from September 4 to 6 followed by a state visit to Singapore from September 6 to 7.
The Department of Foreign Affairs, in a press release, said the visit to Indonesia was upon the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and will be highlighted by the first meeting of the two leaders.
The two are expected to discuss their countries’ active and multi-faceted cooperation on defense, maritime, border, economic, and people-to-people cooperation as well as exchange views on major issues affecting the region and the world.
They will also witness the signing of several key agreements in the areas of defense and culture, as well as a comprehensive Plan of Action that will chart the countries’ bilateral priorities over the next five years.
Marcos Jr. will also meet with business leaders to promote trade and investment to support the Philippines’ economic agenda under his administration, as well as with the Filipino community in Indonesia to assure them of his government’s commitments, including the protection and oration of their rights and welfare.
From Indonesia, the President will visit Singapore upon the invitation of Singaporean President Halimah Yakob.
Marcos Jr. will have separate meetings with the Singaporean President and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to discuss the close bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as regional and global issues.
The President and Lee will also witness the signing of agreements in the areas of counter-terrorism and data privacy.
Marcos Jr. will also attend an economic briefing and business roundtable meetings where he intends to invite investments into the Philippines and create more job opportunities in the country.
He will also meet the Filipino community in Singapore to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to protect their rights and promote their welfare as overseas Filipinos.
The DFA said “the President’s back-to-back visits to Indonesia and Singapore as his inaugural overseas trip demonstrate the importance the Philippines places on relations with fellow Asean neighbors.”
Reports said that apart from Indonesia and Singapore, Marcos Jr. is also set to go to the United States this month but details are still being ironed out.
A newly-elected president of the country usually conducts a visit to member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian (Asean) at the start of their term as a form of courtesy and introduction of the new leadership.
