Activist behind U.S. affirmative action cases sues major law firms

A group founded by Edward Blum, the conservative activist who led the successful U.S. Supreme Court challenge to the consideration of race in college admissions, on Tuesday sued Perkins Coie and Morrison & Foerster over fellowships they offer to racial minorities and LGBTQ+ people, accusing them of unlawful bias against white candidates. Perkins Coie offers “diversity fellowships” that provide stipends of $15,000 to $25,000 and paid positions as summer associates. Applicants must belong to “a group historically underrepresented in the legal profession, including students of color, students who identify as LGBTQ+, and students with disabilities,” according to the firm. Morrison & Foerster has a similar program that is open to applicants who are Black, Hispanic, Native American or members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Biden names former Obama-era lawyer as White House counsel

President Joe Biden named former federal prosecutor and Chicago lawyer Ed Siskel as his top White House lawyer on Tuesday. Siskel served in the White House Counsel’s office for nearly four years when Biden was vice president under former President Barack Obama, including as deputy counsel. A Chicago native, Siskel returned to the Midwest after leaving the Obama administration for stints in private practice as well as a two-year post as counsel for Chicago under Mayor Rahm Emanuel. As Chicago’s top lawyer he sued the Trump administration in 2017 over its so-called sanctuary city policy. Read more.
