Perth's long reigning best small bar Varnish on King has been stripped of its title for the first time in three years by The Mechanics' Institute at WA's annual hospitality awards on Monday night.
The Mechanics' Institute, located in Northbridge, was also a finalist for WA's best cocktail bar and won best bar team during the Australian Hotels Association awards.

Two new kids on the hospitality block claimed bragging rights for best cocktail bar – with the judges unable to split Tiki as FK in Northbridge and The Waiting Room at Crown.
Both opened in the past 12 months.
Settlers Tavern was along among the winners.
Seaside venue Odyssea Beach Cafe is continuing its good run, taking home WA's best tourism initiative on Monday after winning best new venue in 2016.
The coveted best steak sandwich award went to Karalee on Preston in Como. The venue last year won best casual pub dining in Perth.
This year, that title went to the Currambine Bar & Bistro, while the same award in the regional category went to Settlers Tavern in Margaret River.
The south-west pub were also judged joint winners of WA's best wine list with Il Lido Italian Canteen in Cottesloe and won best regional hospitality venue.

Best Perth-based hospitality venue went to The Marina in Mindarie.
CBD venue The Petition Kitchen at State Buildings took out WA's best restaurant alongside joint winner Ria Malay Kitchen in Leederville.
The Saint George Hotel in Innaloo and The Paddington Alehouse in Mount Hawthorn were judged equal best sporting venue, while Eaton Tavern had the best TAB venue.
Australian Hotels Association WA chief executive Bradley Woods said 2017 had been a challenging year for some in the hospitality industry, but praised owners, managers and staff for their unwavering dedication.
"WA's vibrant hospitality industry is a reality thanks to the investments made by the small and large businesses who have confidence in the future of our state," he said.
"The hotel and hospitality industry supports our state not only at the macro level but right down to the community – where the presence of our businesses supports local economies and jobs."
