Owners of a popular cafe in the heart of Perth have taken the “difficult decision” to close its doors for good.
Those in charge of Cafe Biba on King Edward Street made the closure move after deciding not to renew their lease and thanked its customers in a statement.
The notice placed at the cafe’s entrance informed its regulars its last day of trading was on October 2.
It did not make clear if any staff had lost their jobs as a result of the move but did reveal that some workers will be transferring to the other Cafe Biba on Atholl Road, Pitlochry.
The owners of the two eateries also run The Pancake Place restaurants in Dundee, Fife and Elgin.
Cafe Biba’s closure is a big blow to the independent business owner scene in the Fair City.
The cafe was a popular meeting spot for locals and in 2019 the owners backed the PA’s campaign to bring the legendary Stone of Destiny back home to Perth City Hall next door. The notice announcing the cafe’s closure read: “We have taken the difficult decision not to renew the lease in Cafe Biba Perth.
“Our last day of trading will be Saturday, October 2.
“We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our fantastic customers who have supported us over the years.
“It has been (mainly) great fun and we’ve had lots of laughs.
“Some of us are transferring to Cafe Biba Pitlochry, so we would love you to come and visit.
“Remember we also have Pancake Places in Dundee, Dunfermline and Elgin.
“Take care and thanks again.”
The cafe had been praised in 174 reviews on TripAdvisor, receiving a 3.5 star rating.
