A very famous Ukrainian musician made his way through Kelowna this weekend as part of his Big Canadian Tour, raising money to help his fellow Ukrainians defend their country.
“I'm a Ukrainian rock musician, I’m a singer and I play accordion. I started to travel in the summer. All spring I stay at home and I play for the army, for hospitals, for children, for people," explained Oleg Skrypka.
The Founder of the Kelowna Stands with Ukraine Facebook group tells Castanet getting the chance to hear music from back home live here in Kelowna is a special treat for Ukrainians living in Canada.
“Everyone knows him, if I ask any Ukrainian. He’s considered to be a founder of Ukrainian rock style. For many people it’s their first concert in Kelowna ever. I hope it’s a good start for this year. Last year was pretty horrible for Ukraine, and hopefully this year will be much better. It’s kind of like new hope," said Denys Storozhuk.
As the Ukrainian rockstar makes his way through Canada, the Kelowna Stands With Ukraine Facebook Group is urging people to get involved and help make a difference.
“The best way to get involved is to join our Facebook group, Kelowna Stands with Ukraine. That’s what we are for. The group is open for all people of Kelowna, it’s not a Ukrainian group. It’s for anyone who wants to help Ukraine, so we help refugees, we accept donations for refugees, any funds we get are split between helping people here and helping people in Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian musician of 35 years has 11 total stops on his Big Canada Tour, finishing things off in Toronto on Feb 4.
