At the reception, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc welcomed Nigerian Vice President Y. Osinbajo’s first visit to Vietnam, believing that the visit would contribute to consolidating and creating new impetus for the good friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Nigeria.
President Phuc congratulated the VP on Nigeria’s numerous achievements in socio-economic development, as well as its growing regional and international role. He affirmed that Vietnam continues to place great importance on its friendship and multifaceted co-operation with Nigeria, viewing the West African country as one of the priority partners in Africa.
In response, VP Osinbajo expressed his honour at leading the highest-ranking Nigerian delegation to visit Vietnam since 2005 and congratulated the Vietnamese side on its impressive achievements in terms of economic development.
President Phuc and VP Osinbajo welcomed the results of co-operation between the two countries over the recent time in the fields of politics-diplomacy, trade, investment, and the digital economy. They therefore agreed on a score of measures aimed at helping to boost bilateral co-operation in the coming time.
The two sides used the occasion to agree to intensify the exchange of delegations, especially high-level delegations, actively co-ordinate and support each other at multilateral forums, as well as creating a solid premise for further co-operation in other fields, especially in terms of the economy.
The two leaders affirmed that, with both sides boasting a large population and located in dynamic developing regions of Africa and Asia, strengthening the connection between the two economies will be of great significance to full meet the potential of each country, thereby contributing to the prosperous development of the two countries.
Both sides consented to strive to ramp up trade co-operation through increasing promotion activities, as well as creating favourable conditions for market access for each country’s strong commodities, including agricultural products, seafood, and consumer goods for the Vietnamese side, with Nigeria being raw cashew nuts, timber and wood products, and liquefied petroleum gas.
They expressed their desire to strengthen investment ties, offer favourable conditions for businesses of both sides to seek opportunities and implement projects in potential fields, such as oil and gas exploration, production and service provision, as well as information technology.
Furthermore, VP Osinbajo emphasised that Nigeria welcomes and wishes Vietnamese businesses to promote investment in the Nigerian market in the fields of agricultural product processing, digital economy, telecommunications, and renewable energy.
Given the important role of agriculture in the two countries’ economies, the two leaders agreed to identify this as one of the key areas of future co-operation.
The Nigerian side also expressed their positive impression of Vietnamese achievements in the field of agricultural science, with strong aspirations to strengthen ties with Vietnam in the fields of plant varieties and cultivation techniques for food crops.
As part of the occasion, VP Osinbajo conveyed Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s invitation to President Phuc to pay an official visit to the West African country in the future.
