Drake Is the Confirmed Owner of a More Than 300-Acre Texas Resort Property
Rapper Drake has been revealed as the owner of an expansive Texas resort property. He paid $15 million for the 313-acre spread in the city of Brenham, between Austin and Houston, at the tail end of last year. The estate boasts a Mediterranean-style main house plus several haciendas and casitas. There’s also an equestrian center, an organic farm, a greenhouse, a sports court and a restaurant with a 7,000-bottle wine cellar. It’s not clear if Drake plans to resurrect the resort—which in past years ranked among the 10 best hotels in Texas—or use it as a high-end country estate. Robb Report
Prices of Detached Homes in Calgary Surge
The cost to buy a detached home in Calgary has skyrocketed past all other cities in the Canadian province of Alberta this year, according to a report by real estate website Zoocasa. The report found the average price for a detached home in the city has hit C$749,000 (US$546,047). That number is up 13.1% since April of last year and shows a dramatic increase when compared to other cities around the province. Daily Hive
Crumbling Scottish Mansion Is Saved
An 18th-century Scottish mansion just south of Edinburgh has gotten a new life. The crumbling home, deemed to be of national importance, has been saved by a £5.3 million (US$6.75 million) funding award. Campaigners have fought for decades to save Mavisbank House, at one point holding a vigil to prevent its demolition. Built by Scottish architect William Adam in 1723, it was badly damaged by fire in the 1970s. The funding award from the National Heritage Memorial Fund means the building now can be purchased and stabilized. BBC
Pressure Rises to End New Zealand’s Foreign Buyer Ban
A lavish home set amid the stunning scenery outside Queenstown, New Zealand, has languished on the market for 18 months—an example of the country’s sluggish high-end market since the country enacted a foreign buyer ban in 2018. Stakeholders in the country’s luxury real estate sector have been pushing for an end to the ban, especially as the country grapples with a slumping economy. Only citizens, tax residents and Australian and Singaporean citizens—due to pre-existing trade agreements—can buy residential real estate in the country. Bloomberg
