‘We hope for Putin’s participation,’ ambassador tells Russian media.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invite to the G20 in Indonesia next month will not be rescinded, Jakarta’s envoy to Russia said Friday.
Despite Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine and mounting pressure from the international community, Putin is still welcome at the global gathering, ambassador Jose Tavares told Russian state media TASS.
The envoy stressed that invites sent to all G20 leaders by Indonesian President Joko Widodo will not be taken back “even if other countries started putting pressure.” He added that the country hopes for Putin’s participation at the summit.
In line with Indonesia’s traditional position of nonalignment, Widodo has sought to maintain a neutral position despite Putin’s brutal war on Ukraine. In late June, the Indonesian president became the first Asian leader to visit Kyiv and Moscow since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Apart from Russian President Vladimir Putin, the attendance in Bali of China’s President Xi Jinping will also be closely watched. The summit — which will take place November 15-16 — is set to bring them together with U.S. President Joe Biden and EU leaders, in what would be their first in-person encounter since the invasion of Ukraine began. In March, Biden said that he thought Russia should be removed from the G20. The White House is currently taking measure to avoid an encounter between the two presidents in Indonesia.
Tavares, the Indonesian ambassador, said that he sees the summit as an “opportunity for big economies to come together and solve the common problems we face now.”
