The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) has just unveiled a ranking of the 14 most populous towns and cities in Luxembourg in 2022.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is in the centre and the south of the country that most residents have chosen to settle. According to the latest data shared by STATEC, the most populated municipalities in Luxembourg are (almost) all located in the southern half of the country.
Behind the capital with its 128,494 inhabitants, there are eight municipalities in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. These include Esch-sur-Alzette itself with 36,177 inhabitants. But also Differdange (28,641), Dudelange (21,583), Pétange (20,408), and Sanem (17,949) are high up in the list. They are followed by Bettembourg (11,405), Schifflange (11,141), and Kayl (9,721 inhabitants).
In the canton of Capellen, the municipality of Kaërjeng, with 10,775 residents, is also among the 14 largest municipalities in the country.
Together, these nine municipalities are home to more than 167,000 people, i.e. a quarter of the total population of the Grand Duchy.
The other most populous municipalities are, unsurprisingly, located on the outskirts of the capital. This is the case of Hesperange (15,883 inhabitants), Mamer (10,473), and Strassen (10,320).
Further north, Mersch (10,167 inhabitants) also belongs to this group of the 14 most populated municipalities.
According to STATEC, 645,397 people were living in the Grand Duchy on 1 January 2022, a small majority of them Luxembourgers (52.9%). And the population is growing. After a slowdown due to the Covid-19 crisis, no less than 10,667 people moved to Luxembourg in 2021.
