CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – Gabriel Silva scored four goals and assisted on two others, while Osvaldo Pereria had three goals and two assists as the University of Rio Grande hammered Ohio Christian University, 20-0, Thursday afternoon, in River States Conference men’s soccer action at the OCU Soccer Complex.
Freshman Dean Bregenzer (Switzerland) and freshman Jan Bugenhagen added three goals each for the 23rd-ranked RedStorm, who won for a fourth straight time en route to improve to 8-3-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Ohio Christian slipped to 1-11 overall and 1-4 in the RSC with the loss.
The Trailblazers were outshot 43-4 overall and 26-3 on frame, while failing to record a shot of any kind in the second half.
OCU also failed to garner any of the 16 corner kick opportunities in the contest.
Rio Grande got an unassisted goal by junior Benjamin Cam Orellana (Santiago, Chile) just 51 seconds into the match and was off and running, racing to an 8-0 advantage at the intermission.
Silva – a sophomore from Sao Luis, Brazil – made it 3-0 by scoring twice in a span of just under three minutes, while markers from junior Vilius Labutis (Ireland) and Bregenzer just 54 seconds apart nearly 14 minutes later made it 5-0. Freshman Altan Sayar (Switzerland) assisted on Silva’s second goal, while Silva had the assist on the Bregenzer score.
Sayar scored off of a touch by Cam Orellana with 12:44 left in the first half and then added an unassisted goal just over a minute-and-a-half later which pushed the lead to 7-0.
The RedStorm’s final goal of the period was an unassisted score by Bregenzer with 5:27 remaining before the intermission.
Rio’s second half scoring came at a dizzying pace.
Freshman Marco Kramer‘s score just over six minutes into the second stanza was the first of three goals in a span of less than six minutes. Bugenhagen and freshman Marti Puigsegur Calvo (Spain) had the other markers, while freshman Luis Jesse (Germany) assisted on Kramer’s goal and Silva assisted on Bugenhagen’s score.
Silva had each of the RedStorm’s next two goals – coming in less than three minutes of each other – off assists by Jesse and sophomore Ignacio Rullan Del Olmo (Madrid, Spain) to make it 13-0.
Bregenzer scored off of a touch by Pereria with 23:50 left, while Bugenhagen and Pereria netted goals just seconds apart a little over four minutes later which upped to lead to 16-0.
Pereria also scored each of Rio’s next two goals – thanks to assists by Kramer and Rullan Del Olmo – before getting an assist on Bugenhagen’s final marker with 7:16 left.
Jesse set the final score by netting a goal on a penalty kick with one second remaining.
Junior Oton Merin Torro (Spain) started in goal for Rio Grande and recorded a trio of saves.
Adrian Quintero stopped five shots in the loss for the Trailblazers.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday when it entertains West Virginia University Tech for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Evan E. Davis Field.
A fireworks display, in conjunction with Bob Evans Farm Festival, will follow at the conclusion of the contest.
