Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers took his players to Charleston, South Carolina, as a team bonding experience. He also wanted to use it as an educational tool. Rivers and the Sixers organized field trips to the Old Slave Mart Museum, often staffed by individuals who trace their history to the enslaved people of Charleston, and to the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture. Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters and retired professor and historian Bernard Powers both spoke to the team. Rivers has become an agent of change in the NBA and found his voice as an activist.
Don’t be fooled by the fact that this slim new volume from Elizabeth McCracken has the words “a novel” on the cover. It’s a memoir. Associated Press reviewer Rob Merrill says “The Hero of This Book” is simple and lovely, with McCracken’s easy prose a joy to read. The narrator is in London 10 months after her mother’s death to revisit places they loved together while reflecting on their relationship. She is processing her own grief and honoring her mother’s life, even if the subject — her hero — would assuredly have scoffed at the idea.

More than 1 million Minnesotans have qualified for bonus checks to frontline workers to recognize their work during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the payments will be for less than $500. The state will start sending out the payments Wednesday. The Legislature approved $500 million for eligible applicants, and Gov. Tim Walz signed it into law in April. Nearly 1.2 million applications were submitted this summer. The state approved 1,025,655 of them, which means the individual payments will be $487.45 apiece. Officials originally estimated a final pool of 667,000 frontline workers with payments of about $750 apiece, but applications exceeded expectations.
Authorities say they’ve found two more victims who were wounded in a shooting at an Oklahoma high school football homecoming game. Police initially said one 17-year-old was killed and another 17-year-old was wounded in the shooting Friday night at McLain High School for Science and Technology in Tulsa. But authorities said Monday that two other victims were treated for gunshot wounds — a 20-year-old woman and a 9-year-old girl. Tulsa police say both were treated for their injuries and released from a hospital. Police say the suspected shooter ran away after opening fire during the football game. No arrests have been made.

Now, as she reluctantly returns to her hometown for a wedding, another Black girl is taken. Determined to bring the child home, Liz gradually discovers that a Black girl has been murdered in the town every year for generations. Associated Press reviewer Bruce DeSilva says “Jackal,” Erin E. A tally compiled by The Associated Press shows that last week’s suicide bombing at a Kabul education center killed as many as 52 people, more than double the death toll acknowledged by Taliban officials. The AP tally is based on information shared Monday by families of the victims. Most of the victims were female students aged between 17 and 20. Taliban officials have put the death toll at 25, as recently as Monday. The attack took place in an area of the Afghan capital that is populated mostly by ethnic Hazaras, who belong to Afghanistan’s minority Shiite community. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The U.S. Interior Department has launched a set of new policies that would require thousands of law enforcement officers to wear body cameras, ensures the release of footage in some critical incidents and restricts the use of so-called no-knock warrants. The announcement Monday comes after Interior Secretary Deb Haaland launched a task force last year aimed at further building trust between law enforcement and the public. It also follows an executive order from President Joe Biden that focused on federal law enforcement agencies and required them to review and revise policies on use of force.

A trip by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Singapore over the weekend to watch Formula One races has come under attack from critics who described it as “utterly callous” while thousands of Filipinos remain displaced due to a recent typhoon. Marcos Jr. confirmed his trip to Singapore for the Grand Prix event in a brief statement and pictures he posted on Facebook after a flurry of online criticism. He says he was invited with other dignitaries and met new business friends who were willing to invest in the Philippines. Reports had circulated on social media about his unannounced trip. His press secretary did not issue a confirmation until after a Singaporean official posted pictures of Marcos Jr. in the city-state on Facebook.
Bosnia’s long-entrenched sectarian parties are poised to be the overall winners of the country’s general election despite symbolic successes by some opposition candidates who ran on a corruption-fighting agenda. That’s according to preliminary results released Monday in the Balkan country that is divided along ethnic lines and has never fully recovered from its 1992-95 war. Bosnia’s election on Sunday was held amid growing fears that Russia, with the help of its Serb allies in the Balkans, might attempt to reignite the conflict in Bosnia to deflect attention from its military campaign in Ukraine. In one race, the candidate opposing hardline Bosnian Serb Milorad Dodik has refused to concede, claiming vote-rigging.
