132-Year-Old Vancouver Home May Be Torn Down
One of Vancouver’s oldest residences, in Strathcona, the city’s oldest residential neighborhood, may be meeting its end after 132 years of existence. Built in 1892, 617 Union is a worker’s cottage, built by the laborers who came to find employment in early Vancouver. Strathcona has special zoning in place to protect properties dating to 1920 or earlier—but it only applies to homes with a floor space ratio greater than 0.6. 617 Union has a FSR of 0.3, meaning it is eligible to be demolished. While not yet approved, a development permit for a duplex has gone up at the address. Vancouver Sun
