An Auckland private school has topped a list of New Zealand colleges ranked for student achievement.
Kristin School beat 50 schools assessed by private tutoring company Crimson Education for giving students the best shot into top universities such as Stanford and Harvard.
Last year’s top school St Cuthbert’s College dropped to second place while Pinehurst School came third.
Westlake Boys High School and Rangitoto College came 8th and 10th respectively, shooting up at least 12 places from last year’s ranking.

The fourth annual ranking from Crimson used 2020 data to evaluate academic performance, extracurricular opportunities and equal access for students. Those three factors contribute to students’ chances of admission to universities including Princeton, Oxford and Cambridge, it says.
Kristin’s senior school principal David Boardman said students had continued to excel despite the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are extremely proud of how many students have gained entry to top ranked universities including Harvard, Yale and Cambridge.”
He said the school has always placed as much importance on students’ wellbeing and social development as their academic achievement and credited staff, students and the school community for the results.
The school had a university entrance rate of 96%, and an NCEA excellence rate of 25%.
St Cuthbert’s principal Justine Mahon also said her school was particularly proud of its students’ successes against the backdrop of the pandemic.
“To learn at their best, students need to be relaxed and happy, and I think our team at St Cuthbert’s have done an outstanding job over the past two years.”
The school has seen an increase in students being accepted into leading universities around the world and awarded scholarships both in New Zealand and internationally.
The top ten list is dominated by private schools with only 3 public schools making the cut. Six of the schools are coed and all in the top 30 are deciles 8-10.
Westlake Boys High School went from 20th to 8th place, achieving 169 scholarships, 30 outstanding scholarships and 4 Premier Scholarships. Students achieved an NCEA excellence rate of 37%.
Rangitoto College went from 23rd to 10th place, achieving 183 NCEA scholarships and 31 outstanding scholarships. They gained 34% NCEA excellence.
Meanwhile, Hutt International Boys’ School went from 48th to 25th place and their university entrance rate jumped from 81% to 92%. NCEA excellence increased from 10% to 20%.
