Syrian state media say Israeli airstrikes have targeted sites in the vicinity of Damascus, marking the third such strikes in a week. The recent spate of airstrikes comes after a monthlong lull in such attacks. No casualties were reported in the attack early Thursday. A previous strike on Monday wounded a soldier, according to the Syrian military. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Israel has acknowledged, however, that it targets bases of Iran-allied militant groups, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Communities around California’s shrinking Salton Sea are at the center of the latest spat between Arizona and California over how to conserve Colorado River water. The lake is fed by Colorado River water and as it dries up its exposing residents in the area to hazardous dust. U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona said Tuesday the federal government should withhold funding for cleanup around the lake until California agrees to use less Colorado River water. The Democratic senator’s letter comes as he faces a tough reelection battle. California officials say it’s unfair to use the lake as a bargaining chip.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville said Tuesday that the country has too many “takers” instead of workers and suggested that many in younger generations — including people in their 40s — don’t understand they need to work. Tuberville, 68, made the remarks while discussing the national worker shortage during a speech to business groups in south Alabama. He said the nation’s millennials need to be taught, “you have to tote your own load.” The remarks about generational work ethic came two weeks after Tuberville was widely criticized for comments about race and crime.

Tottenham had a last-gasp winner against Sporting Lisbon ruled out by VAR and had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the Champions League, meaning it faces a nervous final group game against Marseille to secure qualification to the round of 16. Harry Kane sparked huge celebrations when firing home deep into stoppage time. But after a lengthy review, the England’s captain’s effort was adjudged offside to prompt a furious reaction from manager Antonio Conte who was shown a red card. Rodrigo Bentancur had put Spurs level in the 81st minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Marcus Edwards’ opener in the 23rd.

A federal judge has lifted a decade-long federal consent decree governing a youth jail in Mississippi’s capital city. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel P. Jordan agreed to Hinds County’s request to terminate the consent decree on the Henley-Young Patton Juvenile Justice Center in Jackson. The decree stemmed from a 2011 class action lawsuit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Disability Rights Mississippi. The suit alleged “inhuman and unconstitutional practices” at the facility, “including regularly isolating children in small cells for 20-23 hours a day and subjecting them to sensory deprivation.” Jail officials say the county has created 115 new policies to improve conditions for detainees.

A woman who was arrested for feeding homeless people in northwest Arizona is suing over a local ordinance that regulates food-sharing events in public parks. Seventy-eight-year-old Norma Thornton became the first person arrested under Bullhead City’s ordinance in March for distributing prepared food from a van at Bullhead Community Park. Her lawyer said the lawsuit, filed Tuesday, is part of a nationwide effort to let people feed those in need. Criminal charges against Thornton were eventually dropped, but she’s seeking an injunction to stop the city from enforcing the ordinance that took effect in May 2021.

In two weeks, the college basketball season opens and Duke plays Jacksonville at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Coach Doug Pederson insists the Jacksonville Jaguars never shopped demoted running back James Robinson. He says the New York Jets called Monday to inquire about a trade and the Jaguars were faced with a tough decision. They chose to move on from a popular and productive player and go with a duo that includes second-year pro Travis Etienne and seldom-used JaMycal Hasty. It was a somewhat risky decision considering the Jaguars were left with an inexperienced backfield. But it was a clear indication the Jaguars are moving forward with Etienne, a first-round pick in 2021 who missed his entire rookie season following a foot injury.

Thomas Cahill, a scholar of ancient languages and belief systems with a knack for popular storytelling who engaged history readers with such bestsellers as “How the Irish Saved Civilization” and “Desire of the Everlasting Hills,” has died at age 82. Travis Loller, a family friend and Associated Press writer, says that Cahill died in his sleep Oct. 18. He began publishing in the early 1970s, but he gained a wide audience in the mid-1990s with “How the Irish Saved Civilization,” in which he cited Ireland’s crucial — and unappreciated — preservation of classical texts after the fall of the Roman Empire. He wrote a series of narratives he called the “Hinges of History.”
