Saudi Arabia is set to launch a joint bid for the 2030 world cup alongside Egypt and Greece, according to English news outlet The Times.
Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi had revealed before that Egypt are planning on hosting the 2030 World Cup and the 2032 Olympic Games.
It was even reported last year that Egypt is ‘keen’ on submitting a joint bid with Morocco to host the 2030 world cup, but it was not confirmed by either party.
News now emerged that Egypt will be involved in another joint bid for hosting the 2030 World Cup, but with Saudi Arabia and Greece.
According to The Times, the bid is expected to be announced in the next few weeks, with Saudi Arabia being the ‘leading partner’, meaning they would support and contribute to infrastructure costs in Egypt and Greece.
The report also revealed that if the three countries managed to win the hosting rights, the tournament will be played in the winter again to avoid the extreme temperatures of the summer.
The bid is also said to be a serious challenge to the uefa-backed joint bid by spain and portugal due to the involvement of three confederations, which would potentially draw support from Asia, Africa, and some European countries.
It’s worth mentioning that Egypt had bid for the 2010 World Cup, but received no votes, coming third to Morocco (10) and South Africa (14).
