German manufacturer will supply a series of thrusters and Rudderpropellers for four commissioning service operations vessels (CSOVs) for Norwegian owner Edda Wind
The propulsion packages for the vessels will consist of two dynamic RudderPropellers of type SRP 460 D, two transverse thrusters of type STT 5 and one retractable RudderPropeller type SRP 380 R.
They will be supplied for four newbuildings ordered from Vard group, but the contract could increase in scope if Edda Wind takes the available shipyard options for four more CSOVs.
Two of the first batch of CSOVs, with dynamic positioning (DP), are scheduled for delivery Q1 2025. The hulls will be built by Vard in Romania, while the final outfitting, commissioning and delivery will be completed at one of its shipyards in Norway.
The two other DP vessels, scheduled for delivery Q2 2025 and Q1 2026, will be built and delivered by Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam.
The azimuth SRP-Ds have an input power of 2,000 kW and a propeller diameter of 2,600 mm for fast-response propulsion. Their propeller shaft will have an 8˚ tilt reducing the interaction between the propulsion units and the and hull, resulting in increased propulsion efficiency.
Schottel said the thruster features improvements including reduced propeller acceleration and deceleration times and a high-speed azimuth steering system with reinforced gear components, which achieves double the rotational speed.
The STT 5 transverse thrusters will have a power rating of 1,400 kW and a propeller of 2,500 mm diameter. Schottel said they have “elastically mounted well installations and an optimised propeller design to guarantee greater comfort and reduced noise and vibration emissions.”
Schottel’s SRP 380 R have an input power of 1,500 kW and a propeller diameter of 2,200 mm, and a propeller shaft tilt of 8˚. When retracted, the SRP-R functions as a 360˚ steerable propulsion unit.
