After a two-year hiatus, Luxembourg’s numerous funfairs are back in full swing, and even the Schueberfouer will soon be back in its traditional form. However, several participants say they’re having trouble hiring students to work at the Schueberfouer throughout the summer.
Life appears to be gradually returning to normal after a two-year period marked by the coronavirus pandemic. The funfairs are back, and the traditional Schueberfouer will take place from 19 August to 7 September.
But the fairground owners are having trouble finding students willing to work at the renowned event. It is said that most of the students have changed careers during the health crisis.
Our colleagues from RTL Télé went to a funfair in Esch-sur-Alzette. Everything is still calm in the morning, and the fairground employees are hard at work setting everything up before the first guests arrive around lunchtime. Jérôme Bigard, who is also at the Schueberfouer at the end of August, is feeling the effects of Covid-19’s two-year hiatus. He has a hard time finding students at this time of year because many are still in the middle of their exams.
Mick Loguercio is in a similar predicament just a few metres away. He, too, has had and continues to face similar challenges, particularly with regard to the funfair: the demand for seasonal jobs is extremely low this year.
Charel Hary, the president of the fairground association, is well aware of the issue. The association is currently working on an online application process to simply the procedure in the future. A website is being set up where all students looking for a job can register.
Some former students, who now have a job, take special leave during the Schueberfouer period in order to work there. After all, even if it is a difficult job, it is well paid over the course of the 20 days.
