Schumer’s CHIPS And Science Bill Includes Major Fed Investment In Companies Like Edwards That Supply Equipment For Making Microchips And Senator Says With Micron’s Major Investment On The Horizon, And Other Industry Leaders Like GlobalFoundries And Wolfspeed Nearby, The Timing Couldn’t Be Better To Make NY Their New Home
STAMP, In Heart of NY Semiconductor Corridor, with Low-Cost Available Utilities, Infrastructure & Surrounding World-Class Skilled Workforce Make It An Ideal Site for New Semiconductor Supply-Chain Development
Schumer To Edwards: Picking WNY Will Be A Win-Win-Win, With A Rapidly Growing Semiconductor Industry Upstate, Strong Manufacturing Workforce, And Majority Leader To Help Fight For Fed Investment
Building on his non-stop advocacy to bolster Upstate NY as a global center for semiconductor manufacturing, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer personally called Edwards Vacuum President, Geert Follens, to urge the global semiconductor supply chain company to look to expand their manufacturing operations in Upstate New York as they consider on shoring operations from overseas. Schumer urged the company, which currently has a facility in Sanborn, NY, to double down on Western New York and consider ready sites like the WNY STAMP campus for any future expansion opportunities.
“Edwards Vacuum’s interest in expanding its manufacturing operations in the U.S., and potentially in Upstate NY, is exciting news for the entire state and a potential game changer for the region. I made it clear to Edwards Vacuum, a leading semiconductor supply chain company, that I strongly support locating any future U.S. expansions in Western New York. Leading Western New York sites like STAMP offer a major opportunity for companies like Edwards Vacuum that are looking to grow by plugging them into Upstate New York’s rapidly growing semiconductor industry,” said Senator Schumer. “From Micron’s major investment in Central NY and Wolfspeed’s new fab in Marcy, to onsemi soon acquiring an East Fishkill facility in the Hudson Valley and GlobalFoundries building a new fab in the Capital Region, Upstate is quickly emerging as a global center for the microchip industry. I stand ready to help in any way for an investment in New York, including securing major incentives through my CHIPS and Science bill, to help further cement New York’s leadership in chip manufacturing and help STAMP reach it’s full potential, including as a potential hub for suppliers to the industry.”
Schumer made the case to Edwards Executives that as evidenced by the ‘one-two punch’ of Schumer and New York Governor Hochul landing Micron, New York has what it takes to compete and is an ideal place with a top-notch workforce and ecosystem to enable semiconductor companies like Edwards Vacuum to expand and succeed. On the call, Schumer explained that a shovel-ready site like STAMP is a prime investment opportunity for a semiconductor supply chain company, not only because of the incentives created in his CHIPS and Science Act, but because of the close proximity to so many rapidly expanding chip fabs in Upstate NY and the Midwest. Schumer said that Micron’s recent investment of up to $100 billion, creating nearly 50,000 jobs in nearby Central New York, supercharges the potential of STAMP, including as a home to semiconductor suppliers. Micron’s investment adds to New York ‘s over 75 other semiconductor companies that employ over 34,000 New Yorkers, including global industry leaders like GlobalFoundries, Wolfspeed, onsemi, and IBM, many of which have semiconductor fabs that Edwards Vacuum supplies and services with state-of-the-art vacuum solutions. Schumer said that this is only the beginning for Upstate New York though, and that if supply chain companies invest in New York now, they will be reaping the rewards for years to come as this industry expands.
Schumer has been the leading champion of bringing semiconductor manufacturing back to America and has a long history of fighting to secure this investment for Upstate New York. Going back to 2019, Schumer proposed a major tech investment “moon shot” in cutting-edge technologies like semiconductors to out-compete China. Schumer then spent the next three years working to pass into law this vision – ultimately manifesting itself into the CHIPS and Science Act, which makes a generational investment in innovation and manufacturing, including providing over $52 billion in new federal incentives for microchip manufacturing and research and development in the U.S., that companies like Edwards Vacuum could tap into.
Schumer explained that Plug Power, which is now building North America’s largest Green Hydrogen Fuel plant at STAMP, is proof-positive of STAMP’s “win-win” ability to leverage its unique assets like low-cost renewable power and proximity to WNY’s world-class workforce and education and training institutions to help leading companies succeed and expand. A shovel-ready site like STAMP offers a significant opportunity for new investment, especially for new clean energy, semiconductor, and other advanced manufacturers that are now ramping up to build new factories thanks to investments made in the Schumer-led Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act that incentivize building new manufacturing operations in the U.S. and not overseas.
Edwards is the leading supplier of vacuum and abatement services and solutions to the global semiconductor industry. Edwards has over 7,000 employees worldwide engaged in the design, manufacturing, and support of high technology vacuum and exhaust management equipment for semiconductor manufacturing and has state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities around the world.
