Macfarlanes has partnered with AI startup Harvey, initially for tasks such as analyzing and summarizing documents, as well as research. The London firm follows Allen & Overy and PricewaterhouseCoopers, both of whom said earlier this year that they will use Harvey for legal work.
Judges have been wary of AI in courtrooms after two lawyers in separate incidents cited cases made up by ChatGPT. The ABA in August announced it is forming a taskforce to address “both the promise and the peril” of the technology. Mcfarlanes said human lawyers will review the work Harvey produces.
