TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that 92 neighborhood units (RT) in South, East, and West Jakarta were flooded on account of extreme weather since Friday.
Head of the Jakarta BPBD Data and Information Center Muhammad Insyaf stated that due to weather factors around Java Island, rainfall was higher, thereby causing flooding in several areas.
“The temporary analysis of the cause of the rain yesterday and today is the advection of wet air masses around Java Island due to atmospheric waves, such as the Rossby Wave and the Kelvin Wave,” Insyaf noted in a written statement received on Saturday.
He later remarked that the wet air masses emanating from the Indian Ocean due to the active dipole mode index (IOD) and light- to moderate-intensity rains were expected to continue until Sunday, July 17.
Insyaf noted that his side had monitored the flood conditions at all locations in Jakarta.
The local sub-districts have also coordinated with the Jakarta Water Resources Sub-department to conduct flood extraction.
“BPBD officers are alerted to monitor all inundation in all sub-districts and coordinate with the Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department to conduct flood extraction in all puddles,” he added.
Insyaf also reminded residents, who are aware or are facing an emergency, to contact the Jakarta BPBD by dialing 112.
Later, his side will coordinate with the sub-district and local village heads as well as with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) to monitor developments pertaining to the situation of flooding.
“Public, who know or are in danger, can use emergency services by dialing the number 112. BPBD officers will respond to it in 24 hours. The BPBD will also coordinate with the PMI, Social Service, and regional ranks to monitor developments,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) continues to remind regional policymakers along with the community to make all-out efforts in mitigating and improving disaster preparedness, such as normalizing river banks, river crossings, clearing garbage blockages in rivers, increasing the dissemination of information to the community, and monitoring weather developments on a regular basis.
People living around cliff slopes and riverbanks should increase their vigil. They are advised to evacuate to a safer location if rains of high intensity lash for over an hour.
