A new CBD go-to for sandwiches
And baps. And rolls. And croque monsieurs. And filled croissants. You might remember Marissa and Adam Bielawski as the husband-and-wife team behind Black Pig Deli, the Beaufort Street outfit that did a fine line in local cheese, produce and charcuterie. Last month, the Bielawskis opened Daxxi, a new cafe on the ground floor of CBD office building 140 St Georges Terrace. And as they did at Black Pig Deli, the couple are serving hefty sandwiches made with a strong WA accent, and the deli’s weighty Reuben is reappearing in the city centre. Other highlights in the takeaway cabinet include a three-cheese croque monsieur, plus breakfast-appropriate bacon and egg baps. The coffee is Gesha, there’s cold-pressed juice to go, and plans are afoot to introduce weekly specials in future.
Sarawak comes to East Perth
Thanks to restaurants such as Two Hands and Kitchen Inn Express, Perth is no stranger to the flavours of Sarawak. This Saturday, April 22, eaters can experience other specialties from the East Malaysian state when Hornbill Sarawak Delicacies returns to the Whistle Stop Cafe inside East Perth’s Public Transport Centre. The menu might be short, but it’s big on porky flavour. There’s the Chinese-influenced stewed-pork-leg rice; the curry rice known as curry banjir; and kway chap, a warming bowl filled with braised porky all-sorts. Food is served from 12pm till 8pm.
A new wine bar for West Perth
Goodbye Gangemi’s, hello Boobook Bottles and Bar. Last month, the independent West Perth bottle shop transformed into a drink-in prospect, allowing guests to enjoy the shop’s impressive wares in-house – perhaps with a plate of something European and wine-friendly (the Catalan classic of tomato bread with sardines, perhaps, or a plate of burrata or jamon serrano). The bar is open from 12pm Tuesday to Friday, while the bottle shop trades from Monday to Saturday.

The region’s annual celebration of good living features 18 of the region’s key venues gathered from the worlds of wine, cider, spirits, produce and food. Throw in typically lush Hills scenery, and you’re looking at the makings of a fine weekend out and about. Further details, including participating venues and accommodation options, are available online.
