Two Mexican parties for Cinco de Mayo
To celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Friday May 5, La Cholita and La Condesa are throwing two all-you-can-eat taco parties. Your $65 buy-in gets you a Margarita on arrival, plus 90 minutes of all the filled tortillas you desire. Bookings are essential.
Late bookers’ guide to Taste Great Southern
Tickets are still available for many of the events at May’s Taste Great Southern food festival (May 4 to 14). You could, for instance, get a crash course on the region’s winemakers and styles at Great Southern Cellar Door that brings together more than a hundred of the region’s wines; head to Gloria Dieu farm for an open-fire feast showcasing the farm’s produce; learn about local Menang, Koreng and Pibelman culture before enjoying a foraging tour and lunch prepared by native food pop-up Fervor; or a campfire dinner and song session led by local singer-cook Courtenay Stickels. Further details and tickets to these events (and more) are available online.
Rethinking the servo breakfast
Traditionally, a servo breakfast was about pies, sausage rolls and a 600ml iced coffee. The chefs at Servo in the Leederville Precinct, it has to be said, have their sights set a little higher for the restaurant’s new weekend offering. From 8am till 10:30am on Saturdays and Sundays, drop in for AM favourites including fried chicken on crumpet, breakfast lamb burgers, smoked shakshuka and free-flowing drinks packages. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor yard bar where a selection of dog-friendly items are available.
Million-dollar riverside views (without the price tag)
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Fremantle waterside bar Jetty Bar & Eats is hosting Sunset Aperitivo, a wallet-friendly way to break up the working week. Between 4pm and 6pm, guests can enjoy drink specials as well as half-priced bar snacks. Those A1 river panoramas, meanwhile, are still complimentary.
Il Locale opens in Subiaco
After winning over Scarborough locals over the past two years, hip pizzeria Il Locale has opened its second location, in Subiaco. As at the original, pliable Neapolitan-style pizzas, Italo-Australian pop culture references galore and bright colours (the boxes are fluro yellow, the menus are pink) are the name of the game. While the business is built around delivery and takeaway, outdoor tables are available for impatient eaters keen to get stuck in right away (which, in the case of Naples-style pizza, is when the pizza is at its best).
