Western Australia shines in Halliday Wine Companion Awards
West Australian winemakers came up big when the winners of this year’s Halliday Wine Companion Awards were announced. Glenn Goodall, chief winemaker at Xanadu, won Winemaker of the Year, while fellow Margaret River outfits LAS Vino and Deep Woods Estate took home the gongs for Dark Horse Winery (think of it as the changemaker to watch) and Best Value Winery, respectively. In the top rated varietals category, Stella Bella’s Luminosa Chardonnay won Chardonnay of the Year; and Flowstone’s Queen of the Earth won Sauvignon Blanc of the Year for an impressive fourth year running.
Handmade mooncakes are back at Lotus Vegetarian Market
Synonymous with Chinese mid-autumn festival celebrations, mooncakes – created with an ornate mould and a sweet paste generally made of lotus seeds – are one of the standout items in the Chinese baked goods repertoire. While mass-produced mooncakes can be found at Asian grocers, the real power move is to head to Lotus Vegetarian Market in Northbridge, where you can score locally made specimens. Lotus co-owner Alex Yong has been making mooncakes by hand since the ’70s – both traditional ones and new-school versions spiked with pandan and chopped nuts. This year, the cakes are available till the end of the mid-autumn festival on September 10.
A soft opening for Lums Wine Bar in Subiaco
By the team behind Subiaco small bar Bark, Lums Wine Bar aims to recreate the strong community vibe of Bark in a more grape-centric space. Named after the grocery and general store that occupied 433 Hay Street in the 1920s, Lums is a two-storey, 120-person space pouring both classic and maverick wines alongside a menu of cheese, charcuterie and other wine-friendly snacks. During the soft-opening stage, ahead of its full launch in September, the bar is open Tuesday to Saturday with a limited menu.
Celebrating winter and culture in Fremantle
Kicking off tomorrow, Fremantle Festival: 10 Nights in Port (August 11–21) sees the port city celebrating winter Freo-style via a program of typically imaginative events. Two will be of particular interest to eaters: the first is Eaters, a rowdy pub quiz with a message about sustainable food pathways; while Fabingo: Bush Tucker BBQ Bingo is a tasting and bingo experience hosted by “Perthonality” Famous Sharron and Bindi Bindi Dreaming’s Marissa Verma. Head to the 10 Nights in Port website for the full program and tickets.
Toasting winter in the Perth Hills
Based on the wassail – an ancient pagan tradition to dispel bad energy – Core Cider’s Fire Fable & Feast (Saturday August 13) is the Pickering Brook cidery’s biggest annual event. Held in Core’s apple shed, the family-friendly celebration features mulled wine, a bonfire, dancing and hearty winter cooking. Tickets – plus a bus transport option – are available online.
