Wise Child Wine Store opens in Fremantle
Since opening in mid-2018, North Fremantle’s Wise Child Wine Store has established itself as one of WA’s most exciting bottle shops. Just before Christmas, owners Lucy Byrnes and James Whineray opened Wise Child’s second store, shifting their focus from North Freo to Freo’s burgeoning West End (hi Chicho Gelato! Hi Peggy’s!). While the OG Wise Child is all about lo-fi wines, management opened outpost number two with a bent towards more conventional drinking – crunchy dry whites and big-name beers, say – thinking that’s what Freo wanted. Turns out Freo had other (wise) ideas. “We thought we’d be selling Marlborough sav blanc, which is totally cool, but it turns out downtown Freo wants to drink pét-nats and orange wines,” says Whineray. Wise Child Wine Store’s Fremantle shop is at 21A Market Street, Fremantle and is open seven days.
West Winds opens new distillery in Margaret River
Also from the department of December-openings-you-might-have-missed: pioneering West Australian distiller West Winds laid down roots in the southwest town of Cowaramup late last year. Featuring a tasting room, tavern, bar and production facility, the West Winds Discovery Centre is both the new spiritual home for a West Australian spirit success story, and a symbol of upwardly mobile Cow-town (as Cowaramup is affectionately known as).
Celebrating the Swan Valley

Subi Spritz returns to Subiaco
Between March 10 and 19, Subiaco will host Subi Spritz, the suburb’s annual 10-day celebration of European eating, drinking and living. This year’s program includes long lunches and aperitivo trails as well as the popular Conti Roll Contest. Program and ticketing details are available online.
A new modern Asian dining option in the CBD
Melbourne’s modern Asian restaurant Miss Mi opens at the Novotel Perth Murray Street this Friday February 3. Following the lead of the Melbourne mothership, Miss Mi’s west coast outpost goes heavy on the grill with the menu featuring dishes such as Sichuan lamb ribs and grilled octopus with cucumber and mint. Cocktails are another focal point, with Miss Mi collaborating with Wandering Distillery to produce a house gin. Bookings are available online.
