David Thompson in the house
It’s been three years since Thai cooking authority David Thompson was last in Perth, and the patriarch of [Long Chim] at State Buildings is making up for lost time. As part of the 2022 edition of State Makers – the Buildings’ annual celebration of food, drink and culture – Long Chim will host three sessions of David Thompson in the House (dinner June 24; lunch and dinner June 25), a chance for eaters to taste the master’s newest additions to the Long Chim menu. Among the dishes on the agenda: roast duck stir-fried with Siamese watercress and bean curd sauce; a corn and salted duck egg salad, plus a red curry of chicken with ginger and eggplant. Tickets are still available and start from $145 per person, food-only.
The ultimate vegetarian sandwich
Last week, Broadsheet shone a light on Falafel Omisi, a low-key kiosk in Yokine doing excellent falafel pitas and other plant-based meals including the sabich, the Jewish-Iraqi fried eggplant, hard-boiled egg and hummus sandwich you didn’t know you needed. This weekend (Saturday June 25, 9am till 11am) Middle Eastern pop-up Yalla Bala (re)enters the sabich chat via a pop-up at Mount Hawthorn coffee shop, In Good Hands. According to Yalla Bala founder Benjamin Kotkis, Tel Aviv’s famous beachside outlet Sabich Frishman was where he cemented his love of the sandwich. “From the tiniest, most unassuming hole in the wall, I encountered the holy grail of fried eggplant,” says Kotkis. “The venue was chaotic – people were yelling and pitas getting stuffed at lightspeed was the craziest lunch run I had ever seen.” Expect similar scenes when Kotkis pops up this weekend.
Big Don’s brisket birria pop-up
Donovan Macdonald, the enigma behind Big Don’s Smoked Meats, has established a reputation for his near-mythical barbeque brisket. He’s also at the forefront of local discussions involving birria, a slow-cooked meat stew from the Mexican state of Jalisco. So when our man combines these two strengths for a walk-up event this Saturday (June 25; 11:30am to 4pm) at the Innaloo Sportsmen’s Club, expect big things and even bigger lines. In addition to the birria box, beef ribs and sausages will also be available, while Archie’s Hot Chicken will be keeping those in line fed with Nashville-style popcorn chicken tacos; the club will also be pouring barbeque-friendly beers.
Around the (whisky) world in 90 minutes
Brilliant West Leederville bottle shop The Wine Thief hosts a global look at all things whisk(e)y this Thursday (June 24, 7pm). Led by Steve Pickup of Vanguard Luxury Brands, the 90-minute tasting will be a rapid-fire introduction to distilleries from around the world including America (Michter’s), Ireland (Glendalough), Japan (Fuji) and Australia (Victorian distilleries Morris and Gospel). Scotland, whisky’s spiritual home, will be represented by Glenallachie. [Tickets are $20 per person and available via email](mailto:sales@thewinethief.com.au] and also include a $20 refund on purchased whiskies from the Vanguard portfolio on the night.
Growing food change in the urban environment
Alana Fluit is committed to creating change. Over the past few years, the gardener and permaculture designer has run environmentally minded programs in Victoria Park including Give a Damn (a grassroots program targeting single-use plastic) and the Common Ground Garden behind community organisation The Haven. Her next project is converting a small block of land into Project 76, an urban farm that aims to grow nutritious, low-carbon-mile vegetables and fruits for members of the local community. The project is slowly inching towards its $5000 crowd-funding target in a campaign that concludes at the end of the month; supporters can choose from donator gifts including produce boxes, seedlings and t-shirts.
