Vediamoci, Canteen Pizza
The bad news: Canteen Pizza, Cottesloe’s wondrous pizzeria where beachgoers could drop in post-swim to enjoy thrilling Naples-style pizza and Italian wines, announced its sudden closure over the Labour Day long weekend. The good news: it’s more of a case of “see you soon” than “goodbye forever” with Canteen set to reappear in a new location in Applecross with some pop-ups along the way. Follow the pizzeria on Instagram to keep up with the news (and look to our wrap of the city’s better pizzerias for more flatbread, tomato sauce and topping inspiration).
The last dance for a Margaret River favourite
Last week also saw news from Margaret River that cellar-door restaurant Arimia would be closing, although diners have three months to say their goodbyes to this remarkable, environmentally conscious farm and dining room. For the past five years, Arimia owners Ann Spencer and Evan Hayter have led a key part of the sustainable eating discussion, not just in WA, but nationally. Among the ways Arimia has greened its eats: the property is solar-powered and off-the-grid, the organically certified farm raises its own pigs and trout, and much of its produce is grown in the on-site kitchen garden. The restaurant’s final service will be on Sunday June 18.
A new weekly seafood party
Traditionally, Friday was the day for eating fish. The crew At Besk, however, reckon that Sundays are far better suited to seafood consumption. To prove their point, the West Leederville funsters have launched Fiske, a weekly Sunday seafood and wine party. There’ll be beer-battered fish’n’chips (including gluten-free options), whiting tacos, prawn rolls and other fish treats served alongside seafood-friendly wines and tunes from guest DJs.
Micrology Saturdays
Until Easter, Micrology Coffee Roasters will be opening its colourful Osborne Park venue on Saturdays, giving coffee fans an extra day to enjoy its precision-made coffees and beautifully designed space. The party runs from 6am to midday and will feature guest chefs as well as DJs playing tunes. If the response to this weekend’s Yalla Bala pop-up is anything to go by, this sounds like a Saturday morning party you won’t want to miss.
Extended hours at Big Loaf
O’Connor might be an unexpected place to find an excellent bakery, but then again, Big Loaf and the entire North Street Store family have a habit of leaning into the unexpected. Since opening in late 2020, Big Loaf hasn’t just helped North Street Store get more bread out to more people, it’s also given locals somewhere to get great bread, quiches and other baked goods. This month, the bakery announced its public-facing shop is staying open longer and will trade from 6am to 5pm daily.
