Truffle Kerfuffle returns with a mighty Australian line-up
The cancellation of last year’s Truffle Kerfuffle was sad news for eaters around the state. Thankfully, it looks like the Southern Forests’ annual food and drink party is making up for lost time with a brilliant line-up for this year’s edition. From June 23 to June 25, the region will host a long weekend of truffle hunts, cooking demonstrations, wine masterclasses and long-table lunches and dinners, with Fonty’s Pool once again serving as festival hub. On a personal note, it’s a privilege and joy to be hosting this year’s chef’s cabin masterclasses, not least because these intimate cooking classes feature interstate talents such as Tasmania’s Analiese Gregory (formerly of Franklin, now a wandering cook), Sydney-based television personality Colin Fassnidge, and Jake Kellie of Adelaide’s Arkhe. They’ll be joined by local heavyweights Melissa Palinkas (Young George), Ben Ing (Alberta’s) and Paul Iskov of Fervor. Program and booking details are available online. See you in Manjimup: don’t forget your big jackets.
Melbourne institution Tipo 00 comes to Perth
“Tipo 00 was the pasta restaurant Melburnians didn’t know we needed,” wrote my (Melbourne-based) Broadsheet friend and colleague, Nick Connellan. “Handmade gnocchi? Squid ink tagliolini? We had plenty of that in 2014, but with its indefinable charm, Tipo squeezed into our hearts anyway.” In June, Perth gets to experience some of that Tipo magic when chef Andreas Papadakis comes to Mount Hawthorn’s Casa for a one-off dinner on Tuesday June 6. The menu will feature hits from the Tipo menu alongside classics from spin-off restaurants Osteria Ilaria and pizzeria Figlia. In short: an unmissable event for Italophiles. Tickets are $100 per person and available online with drinks on consumption.
The return of the Sunday roast
To mark the arrival of the cold, West Leederville’s Besk has launched Riste – Roast & Vino Sundays. As the name (and day) suggests, the menu is based on the Sunday roast: choose from porchetta or beef rib, available in a serve for two or four, alongside roast trimmings, drinks specials and live DJs. Bookings and menus are available online.
Ready-to-drink cocktails from Perth bartending big hitters
Perth bartenders Mitch Keane and Andrew McIntyre have serious cred in the drinks game, having opened and run bars, trained emerging bar talent and mixed some very, very good drinks. For the next stage of their careers, the pair have figured out a way to bottle the good times so they can share their knowhow more widely. Introducing Idle Hands Drinks Co, a new line of elite bottled cocktails being sold at bottle shops and bars around the state. Among the drinks available as part of the opening range: a Watermelon Collins riffing on gin classic the Tom Collins; a Sparkling Pina Colada; and a Margarita Fizz.
Testun turns one
Brash, colourful Testun is the upstart Italian bar and restaurant Perth didn’t know it needed. To mark one year of imaginative Italian cooking, “Beaufort Street’s favourite neo-Italo neighbourhood osteria” is throwing its first birthday party and slinging snacks, good drinks and high-energy tunes. The fun kicks off from 3pm on Sunday June 4.
