Changing things up at Millbrook
After four years at the popular Jarrahdale kitchen garden restaurant, Jamie Hembrow is calling it a day. During his time as head chef, Hembrow helped cement Millbrook’s No Waste Monday nights as one of the state’s hottest and hardest-to-book tables (start planning months ahead for a booking), while also freeing up executive chef Guy Jeffreys to focus on developing the seasonal seafood offering at sister restaurant Bunkers Beach House. Stepping into Hembrow’s role will be Justin Wong, formerly of Tiny’s, Propeller, Lulu La Delizia and, most recently, Swanbourne wine bar Vinotto. “I can barely keep a basil plant alive: you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place in Perth to learn how to [be a] green thumb,” says Wong about his imminent move to the Perth Hills. Wong takes over on June 9.
Cooking in aid of Yemen
Former Balthazar chef Skye Faithfull is joining forces with mentor Scott Brannigan (executive chef at the Makers in Common group as well as chef at Balthazar while Faithfull was an apprentice) to host The Children of War: Yemen, a dinner raising funds for children affected by the conflict in Yemen. The dinner will be held at Bread in Common on Thursday May 19 and feature Faithfull, Brannigan and friends including Amanda Yong of Project Womn and Young George’s Melissa Palinkas. They will serve a six-course dinner offering matched wines and top-shelf WA produce. Funds raised will go to UNICEF, who are on the ground helping children displaced by the war. Tickets are $175 and can be purchased online.
A veteran Perth chef explores the breadth and scope of Asian flavours
David Coomer, culinary director of Island Market, has built a reputation for booming Asian flavours, from the legendary ma hor at Star Anise to the roast Wagin duck served at Fuyu. On Friday May 13, Coomer will bring his Asian cooking know-how to the fore at Island Dynasty, a one-night, five-course dinner big on spice and texture. The menu will include dishes such as crisp rice pancake with blue manna crab, wood-roasted king prawns with XO butter, and duck with mustard greens. Tickets are $110 – an optional matched drinks option is available – and can be booked online.
Mother’s Day in Perth
Wine bar dining. Gelato bon bons. All-in vegan Indian feasts. The options for Mother’s Day this year are as varied as they are delicious. At Pinchos, mums dining as part of a family group will be treated to a free glass of cava on arrival, while the bar’s bottomless Spanish brunch will also be available. The Swan Valley’s Old Young’s Kitchen is serving an $80 Mother Day’s brunch inclusive of a welcome cocktail while Mayfair Lane is offering an English-style Sunday roast starring Stirling Ranges beef with all the trimmings – including a Yorkshire pudding.
Chicho Gelato will be offering a $10 gelato bon bon, with a dollar from every sale being donated to Breast Cancer Care WA (pre-orders available till Thursday and recommended). Modern Indian eateries Sauma ($55 per person) and Topi ($50 per person) at the new Karrinyup dining precinct are serving Mother’s Day lunch and dinner menus, with both venues offering vegetarian and vegan options. Popular Northbridge natural wine bar Wines of While will host a $75-per-person Mother’s Day set lunch including a glass of sparkling on arrival, while guests at Fraser’s can enjoy Mother’s Day brunch or dinner with a view.
