ANCIENT LIFE

Inside the ancient city of Pompeii
With its relatively intact roads, homes, and shops, the ancient city of Pompeii feels both familiar and very far away. The city, preserved under the ash of Mt. Vesuvius’s explosion nearly 2000 years ago, has been dug up, looted, conserved and ultimately protected. In 2019 photographer Luigi Spina was commissioned to document the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Inside Pompeii, out now from Getty, features Spina’s many photographs.

The gift of jewelry was an ancient love language
If you’re gifting your loved one jewelry this holiday season, that really is a classic move—people in antiquity did it too. Love played a huge role in the lives of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and they used jewelry as well as literary works, pottery, wall paintings, and mosaics to express their adoration and intentions.

Honoring the legacy of a groundbreaking photographer
The late artist Roy DeCarava—born December 9, 1919, in Harlem—honed a style of photography and mentorship that deeply influenced photographers Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems, whose work was on view this year at the Getty Center. “Roy DeCarava was probably the first man I know who took me seriously as an artist,” says Weems.
