NEW YORK (AP) — A shooting outside U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin’s Long Island home is giving the Republican a fresh, personal perspective on the kind of violent crime that has been a focus of his campaign for governor.
Two 17-year-old boys were wounded by gunfire from a moving car Sunday afternoon while walking in front of Zeldin’s home, police said. Zeldin’s daughters, both 16, heard the gunshots, locked themselves in a bathroom and called 911.

Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons supply the talent. Embarrassment provides the motivation. The Brooklyn Nets know they made a monumental mess of the 2021-22 season, turning a championship contender into a first-round flop. Durant was so discouraged he asked to be traded, Irving so unreliable he didn’t get a contract beyond this season. They’re back together now, so don’t count out Brooklyn. They have good players and the memories of last season to drive them. Brooklyn went 44-38, managing only a No. 7 seed before getting swept by the Boston Celtics.

Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker is slated to campaign with Sens. Rick Scott of Florida and Tom Cotton of Arkansas. Tuesday’s event in metro Atlanta offers the latest sign that national Republicans are digging in on Walker’s candidacy as he continues to deny reports that he paid for an abortion of a woman with whom he later fathered a child. Walker is trying to unseat Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in a critical Senate race. The campaign swing by Washington heavyweights highlights a simple calculation for the GOP establishment: It’s too late to abandon a competitive candidate with a deadlocked Senate.
The Ohio Supreme Court has ordered a Democratic state legislative candidate to be listed on November ballots, after a tie had been broken against her by the state’s Republican elections chief. In its 4-3 ruling Tuesday, the high court found that Republican Secretary Frank LaRose and the two GOP members of the Athens County Board of Elections who voted against placing Tanya Conrath on the Nov. 8 ballot “acted in clear disregard of applicable law.” Conrath is challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Jay Edwards for eastern Ohio’s 94th House District, which includes all or part of Athens, Meigs, Morgan and Washington counties.

The Los Angeles Clippers have sky-high hopes of winning the franchise’s first championship now that Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are fully healthy. The duo heads into their fourth year together in Los Angeles. The Clippers also added five-time All-Star guard John Wall over the summer. Bell won the race he had to win at Charlotte and vaulted from 11th place in the standings to fourth in a race that eliminated four other drivers. Among them was defending series champion Kyle Larson. The Cup and Xfinity series move to Las Vegas this weekend. In Formula One, Max Verstappen completed his inevitable second consecutive season title with a victory in Japan. Verstappen has won 12 of 19 races this season with four remaining on the schedule.
Lesotho’s businessman-turned-politician Sam Matekane of the Revolution for Prosperity party is set to become the southern African country’s next prime minister after cobbling together a coalition. Matekane, 64, announced the new three-party coalition Tuesday in the capital, Maseru. His party will team up with two smaller parties, the Alliance of Democrats and the Movement for Economic Change parties, to secure the parliamentary majority needed to form a government. Matekane, whose party was only launched in March this year, won 56 of the legislature’s 120 seats in last week’s general election. That was five shy of the 61-seat threshold required for any party to form a government on its own.

Comedians Eric André and Clayton English are challenging a police program at the Atlanta airport they say violates the constitutional rights of airline passengers. They say the program particularly targets Black passengers through racial profiling and coercive searches. Lawyers for the two men filed a lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Atlanta alleging they were racially profiled and illegally stopped by Clayton County police at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The men say officers singled them out during separate stops months apart because they are Black and grilled them about drugs as other passengers watched. Clayton County police say the stops are random and consensual.

Most of that activity has been focused in the northern West Bank. Over 100 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, while at least three Israeli soldiers have died.

Jalen Brunson has the New York Knicks believing the search for a point guard is over at last. Never mind that he was never even a full-time NBA starter until last season, or that the quest to find the long-term answer at point guard in New York seemingly never ends. The former second-round pick has the keys at Madison Square Garden and the Knicks appear sure it’s going to be a smooth ride. He averaged a career-best 16.3 points last season for Dallas. If he is as good as the Knicks think, perhaps they can return to the postseason after missing it last season.

Voters in some battleground states will be deciding ballot proposals this November that could reshape the way they vote in the 2024 presidential election. In Michigan, meanwhile, voters will decide whether to expand access to early voting. Connecticut voters also will decide an early voting issue while Nebraska voters will consider photo ID. A Nevada measure proposes to switch to ranked-choice voting.

Middleton missed the Celtics series with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
