A federal court in southern Texas quickly moved to reassign about 3,500 bankruptcy cases after the sudden resignation of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge David Jones in Houston. Jones has handled more corporate bankruptcies in recent years than any other U.S. bankruptcy judge.
Judges Marvin Isgur and Christopher Lopez, who are already among the busiest in the U.S., will divide Jones’ large-company caseload between them, while also accepting all new big Chapter 11 cases filed in Houston. Read more.

Microsoft closed its $69 billion acquisition of video game maker Activision Blizzard last week, but the Federal Trade Commission is pressing on with its antitrust challenge to the deal. The fight reminds Jenna Greene of another hotly contested merger, when the FTC in 2008 scored a narrow appellate win nearly a year after Whole Foods consummated its merger with rival grocer Wild Oats.
