Amazon Web Services (AWS) will provide cloud storage for Sidus Space‘s new Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation, LizzieSat, under the terms of a new contract the operator announced on Tuesday.
Sidus Space is a Space-as-a-Service (SaaS) company that provides commercial satellite design, manufacture, launch, and data collection services. Its LizzieSat LEO microsatellite system is designed to collect and analyze data from space and allow customers to test new technologies in orbit. The satellites are partially 3D manufactured, each weighing in at 220 pounds each.
Sidus Space said it would leverage AWS-managed services like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to provide global mission control operations for LizzieSat.
“After careful evaluation, we selected AWS because the company provides a superior solution to meet our technical needs,” John Curry, chief mission operations officer at Sidus Space said in the announcement. “AWS allows us to more reliably operate a secure mission control center anywhere and anytime due to its extensive private network capabilities. AWS technology removes infrastructure restraints and brings simplified, secure access to critical information to ensure mission success.”
Sidus’ first satellite is set to launch aboard a NASA Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) mission to the International Space Station later this year.
