The strong recovery in air travel continued in May 2022 as Singapore relaxed border restrictions in April 2022, removing the need for quarantine and on-arrival COVID-19 tests for fully vaccinated travellers, and removing pre-departure COVID-19 tests. Apart from North Asia, travel demand recovered rapidly across all route regions. Singapore Airlines and Scoot carried a total of 1,705,200 passengers in May 2022, up 17.4 percent from the previous month. Group passenger capacity (measured in available seat-kilometres) reached 61 percent of pre-Covid-191 levels in May 2022, 4 percentage points higher than the month before.
The group passenger load factor (PLF) for the month stood at 78.2 percent, the highest since the onset of the pandemic. This was an improvement of 5.5 percentage points month-on-month or 63.9 percentage points year-on-year.
Cargo operations registered a cargo load factor of 65.4 percent, or 22.3 percentage points lower year-on-year. Cargo capacity (capacity tonne-kilometre) grew 30.2 percent on the back of passenger flight resumptions across the network. Cargo loads (freight tonne-kilometres) declined 3 percent as cargo demand was affected by the pandemic controls in China. In addition, more belly-hold space was allocated for baggage carriage as passenger load factors improved.
During the month, SIA resumed operations to Medan, while Scoot recommenced services to Nanjing. At the end of May 2022, the group’s passenger network covered 97 destinations including Singapore. SIA served 72 destinations2 while Scoot served 46 destinations2 as of end-May 2022.
