UPDATE (Aug 16): FIFA suspended All India’s Football Federation (AIFF) due to “undue influence from third parties” on Tuesday. As it stands, India will not be allowed to take part in the friendlies against Singapore and Vietnam.
The Singapore men’s national football team will play international “A” friendly matches against Vietnam and India on Sep 21 and 24 respectively during the upcoming FIFA window.
Both matches are set to take place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam at the Thong Nhat Stadium, and serve as preparation for the year-end ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022.
The Lions, currently ranked 159th in the world, last faced 97th-ranked Vietnam in June 2016, where the game ended in a goalless draw.
Singapore’s last meeting against India (ranked 104th), however, took place nearly a decade ago in October 2012, where the Lions clinched a 2-0 victory courtesy of Khairul Amri and Fazrul Nawaz.
The Lions were last in action at the Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers, which saw them earn a third place finish following losses to Kyrgz Republic and Tajikistan and a single win against Myanmar.
The finalised travelling squad and other details will be announced closer to the start of the FIFA window, which runs from Sep 19 to 27.
The AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022’s official draw is also set to take place in Bangkok, Thailand on Aug 30.
Nine teams – Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – have been confirmed for the draw, while Brunei Darussalam and Timor-Leste are in contention for the tenth and final spot.
