It’s almost that time of year again when we deck ourselves out in red and white and sing this is home, truly as loud (and as in-tune) as we can. But the National Day Parade isn’t the only place you can join in on the National Day festivities this year.
From firework displays to National Day carnivals, there are a whole bunch of activities lined up and various other places in the heartlands where you’ll be able to take part in the celebrations — and here’s where you can head to in order to catch all of them.
1. Fireworks (9 August)
2. National Day Carnivals (from the weekend before 9 August)
3. Red Lions Free-fall Jumps (7 August)
4. Fighter Jets Flypast
It wouldn’t be the National Day Parade without the yearly breathtaking display of fireworks — but you won’t need to be squeezing in the audience or crowd at the floating platform to catch them this year.
Instead, fireworks will light up the sky at five other locations across the island. These places are all in the heartlands so you won’t have to go far to catch the brilliant displays.
You’ll be able to catch the heartlands firework displays at these places:
The heartlands displays will happen on 9th August at the same time as the main parade’s display, between 8.15pm and 8.25pm, though entry to the stadiums start from 6pm onwards.
But if you prefer to catch the parade’s firework display at Marina Bay, there are also plenty of great spots for you to do so.
Ce La Vi
A great view of the fireworks and a delicious meal on the rooftop of the Marina Bay Sands? Yes please.
With unparalleled views of the Singapore skyline, the iconic Ce La Vi on the 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands is one of the best places to enjoy the National Day firework display (on Singapore’s 57th birthday, too). From 5pm to 9pm on National Day, the restaurant will have a special one-night-only BBQ dinner menu, where you’ll be able to dig into a Classic BBQ Platter (S$155+) or a Surf & Turf BBQ Platter (S$180+) as you watch the dazzling firework display.
And to celebrate the special occasion, there will also be face painting sessions, as well as stations with beloved local snacks such as muah chee.
Marina Barrage
A picnic with family or friends at Marina Barrage is fun on any day, but on National Day, you’ll also be treated to a spectacular view of the fireworks display as you eat.
It’s also a great spot for cycling or kite-flying, so you’ll be able to spend the afternoon having fun before the parade starts. Otherwise, just lay out a picnic mat, bring along some food, and chill on the sprawling rooftop lawn as you wait for the fireworks to start.
Gardens by the Bay
The Gardens by the Bay boasts some incredible views of the firework display, and you’ll be able to explore the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome, check out the new Active Garden, or have a relaxing picnic as you wait.
In particular, the waterfront Bay East Garden has some of the best views of the Marina Bay area — and it’s generally one of the less crowded spots within the garden too.
Singapore Sports Hub
If you want to catch the firework display without missing the parade telecast, Singapore Sports Hub will be holding a live screening of the parade at OCBC Square and Stadium Roar. When the fireworks start, just head to the Stadium Riverside Walk, where you’ll be able to get a great view of the display.
There will also be NDP packs and old school snacks up for grabs, though these are available in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis.
You won’t need to wait all the way till National Day for the fun to begin this year, because the weekend before 9th August, there will be National Day carnivals held all across the island. Filled with performances, activities, and exhibitions, these carnivals are a great way to get into the mood of the National Day festivities.
The carnivals will be held from 4pm to 9pm at these five locations:
You can apply for carnival tickets either online or at your neighbourhood community centre (CC), but note that only physical tickets from the CCs will come with event coupons and NDP fun pack redemptions.
More information about ticketing can be found here.
Our favourite Red Lions will also be making an appearance in the heartlands the weekend before National Day.
On 7th August, they’ll be making free-fall jumps at these two locations:
Head down to check out the exciting event, and be sure to cheer the Red Lions on as they make their jumps!
Another thing that’s always exciting at the National Day Parade is the aerial flypast with the fighter jets and helicopters.
This year, six F16C/Ds will take to the sky in a Delta formation around Singapore from 5.50pm to 6.15pm on National Day. Apart from that, there will also be the state flag flypast, where two Chinook helicopters, each accompanied by a pair of Apache helicopters, will fly across the island with the Singapore flag from 5.25pm to 6.15pm.
So dig out your best red shirts, grab a mini Singapore flag or two, and join in the National Day festivities!
