Singapore will soon make mask-wearing optional indoors, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Sunday (21 August 2022).
Announcing this at the National Day Rally 2022, the Prime Minister noted that this comes as Singapore’s COVID-19 situation stabilises, and in a move to “prevent people from getting tired.”
That said, masks will continue to be required on public transport, where people are in prolonged close contact in a crowded space, and in healthcare settings such as clinics, hospitals, and residential and nursing homes, where there are vulnerable persons.
PM Lee elaborated: “For schools, in particular, we should not need masks in class. I know parents are a little bit worried, but I think there is no need to worry, we have assessed it, and we think it is safe. The children do need to be able to see the facial expressions of their teachers and of each other. You have to learn to read faces.”
The Prime Minister added that the Multi-Ministry Taskforce will be making an official announcement with more details on the adjusted safe management measures soon.
