This year’s edition of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup sees Singapore drawn into Group B alongside Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.
Previously known as the AFF Suzuki Cup, the regional tournament will run from Dec 20 to Jan 16, 2023, featuring 10 ASEAN teams.
The tournament will revert to the same home-and-away format last seen in the 2018 edition, where teams play two games at home and two away in the group stages.
Singapore will first take on Myanmar on Christmas Eve (Dec 24) at the National Stadium. Both teams last faced each other in a 6-2 Singapore win during this year’s Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers, which saw Ikhsan Fandi net his first international hat-trick.
The Lions will embark on their first away game on Dec 27 to take on Laos. Singapore last faced Laos in 2014, with Baihakki Khaizan and Khairul Amri scoring in a 2-0 win.
They will then face Vietnam at home on Dec 30, a team that Singapore will play in an upcoming friendly on Sep 21. The teams played out a 0-0 draw in their last encounter.
Singapore will travel across the Causeway to face Malaysia in their penultimate group game on Jan 3. The Lions came out victorious in their last encounter this year, with Ikhsan Fandi scoring a brace in a 2-1 win during the FAS Tri-Nations Series.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals and subsequently the finals, which are played over two legs.
