INSIDE GETTY

Why so blue?
Nestled in the idyllic green countryside of southwestern France, alongside a sparkling river, sits a cluster of old stone buildings where the tradition of hand papermaking is alive and well. Michelle Sullivan, associate conservator of drawings at the Getty Museum, traveled to France for a workshop; the knowledge she gained became particularly useful as she prepared for the current Getty exhibition Drawing on Blue.

What is Attic pottery?
No, it’s not a box of lumpen bowls some relative made in pottery class. “Attic” comes from Attica, a region of Greece, where the pottery industry flourished from the 6th to 4th centuries BCE. Thousands of Attic vases and fragments survive today, and you can still find many pieces at the Getty Villa Museum and in galleries around the world.

To open one of Colette Fu’s books is to delight in the magic of pop-up books and imagine what stories inspired the vivid, engaging photographs. Fu, a Chinese American artist, tells us the story behind We Are Tiger Dragon People, a series sparked by a Fulbright fellowship in Yunnan Province.
