Great post! Out of school, I had a “manual” job for several years, but moved on for some of the reasons cited above. But the demand for these services and capabilities is huge, with a long runway. You captured this nicely.
Hi Sheri – great article. I really enjoy your column. I also took a white collar -> blue collar path career-wise and was very happy with my choice. If I was younger I would try to become an electrician.
Regarding multi-family housing….I think it is important to distinguish between dwellings that have attached garages and those that don’t. At my HOA I evaluated getting a charger for the common area parking, but it didn’t really make sense for us since all of our units have attached garages where owners can install their own chargers if they desire.
For any young woman who is considering a trade, there are supportive groups that help them get started. Web Link Is just one of them. (That’s tradeswomen dot org). Less than 4% of trades are made up of women. Being kind of an old hippie, I try to hire tradeswomen to support them when possible. They have to study through apprenticeships and become journeypeople just like men do, and the Union contracts guarantee equal pay for equal work regardless of gender.
