STMicroelectronics has further extended support for Microsoft’s Azure RTOS in the STM32Cube development environment, covering additional high performance, mainstream, ultra-low-power and wireless microcontrollers (MCUs).
The Azure RTOS was acquired with ThreadX in 2019 and ST says it is working with Microsoft to allow the Azure RTOS to use key IP in STM32 MCUs, such as the hardware crypto core.
The STM32Cube Expansion packages support nearly all 700 STM32 MCUs sold today and the packages are now available on GitHub. This allows engineers to can configure the middleware stacks within STM32CubeMX’s graphical user interface, which further integrates Azure RTOS into the STM32 ecosystem and lowers the barrier to entry.
ST points to Azure RTOS is the only free OS with user-friendly licensing terms for embedded systems that comes with certifications for safety with IEC 61508 SIL 4, ISO 26262 ASIL D and IEC 62304 Medical Class C, and security with EAL4+ and FIPS 140-2.
The packages also include application examples for developers, including FileX, NetXDuo, ThreadX, and USBX.
STM32Cube simplifies developing with Azure RTOS as a standalone package or as add-on configurable components. The Azure RTOS suite is fully supported in the STM32CubeIDE tool and the STM32CubeMX initializer, which can directly configure Azure RTOS components. ST has added free code examples that help accelerate development and includes several demonstration projects that are ready to run on STM32 Nucleo boards, Discovery kits, and evaluation boards. Code can be alternatively accessed on STMicroelectronics Github.
The Azure RTOS suite comprises a comprehensive and consistent middleware offer for embedded projects. It includes the ThreadX real-time operating system, which has a minimal memory footprint, and the FileX fault-tolerant FAT file system with LevelX wear leveling for NAND and NOR Flash memories. The suite also comes with NetX Duo industrial-grade TCP/IP stacks, and the USBX USB stack with host and device support.
The X-CUBE-AZRTOS-H7 contains demos for the NUCLEO-H723ZG Nucleo-144 development board, the STM32H735G-DK, or STM32H747I-DISCO Discovery Kits, and the STM32H743I-EVAL evaluation board.
