Stellantis announced Wednesday it would eliminate the third shift at its Warren Truck Assembly Plant on Mound Road due to the ongoing impact of the global microchip shortage.
In a prepared statement, the automaker said it was moving to a two-shift operation to improve production efficiency. According to the statement, no workers will be laid off; full-time third-shift seniority employees are to be redeployed to other shifts. The shift reduction will reduce work hours for non-seniority supplemental employees.
A spokesperson for Stellantis said the company would not disclose how many workers would be affected by the shift reduction.
The Warren Truck Assembly Plant employs 5,523 workers and currently produces the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer as well as the Ram 1500 Classic.
The retail price of a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer starts at approximately $88,440; the Grand Wagoneer pricing starts at $95,440.
A person who answered the phone at UAW Local 140 advised The Macomb Daily that its president, Eric Graham, would not be available for comment until Oct. 17.
Graham was quoted in The Detroit News saying slow sales of the Wagoneer vehicles due to inflation and rising interest rates played a part in the shift reduction. He noted that a top-of-the-line Jeep Grand Wagoneer costs in the neighborhood of $130,000.
Stellantis said it informed the Michigan Department of Labor, the City of Warren, and the UAW of the shift change.
