Stop asking aspiring lawyers about their mental health, psychology group says

The American Psychological Association, the world’s largest professional psychology group, has joined the push to end the required disclosure of personal mental health information by individuals applying to become lawyers. Mental health advocates say questions about an applicant’s mental health status dissuade law students from seeking help out of fear they will be denied admission to the bar. According to the American Bar Association, 38 jurisdictions include at least one such question on their character and fitness questionnaire. Read more.

U.S. judge orders Southwest lawyers to undergo ‘religious liberty training’

U.S. District Judge Brantley Starr ordered three senior lawyers at Southwest Airlines to attend “religious liberty training” conducted by a prominent conservative Christian legal rights group, saying they undermined an earlier ruling in a flight attendant’s religious bias case. Starr, a Trump appointee, gave the lawyers until Aug. 28 to attend an eight-hour training conducted by conservative Christian legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, which is routinely involved in high-profile court cases on abortion and religious liberties. Trump criminal charges go to heart of KKK Act

The latest charges leveled against former President Donald Trump were brought under Reconstruction-era laws and the stakes are impossibly high, for the defendant as well as the country. The most serious charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, even as Trump remains the Republican front-runner. Columnist Hassan Kanu writes that though those laws were written to combat the Ku Klux Klan, they are precisely applicable to Trump’s brazen attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
