Stroock & Stroock & Lavan may soon be rid of its pension obligations, which could remove a potential sticking point as the New York-founded law firm seeks to complete a merger. The buyout is subject to a vote among the firm’s retired partners, which co-managing partner Alan Klinger said is in process. The current size of the pension is around $6 million annually. Read more.
While Stroock hunts for a merger partner, here’s a look at firms that have combined recently: Dinsmore & Shohl launched an office in Orlando, Florida, by merging with local firm Mateer & Harbert … Clark Hill absorbed Los Angeles-based Barton Klugman & Oetting, marking the firm’s fifth combination with another smaller law firm since 2022 … Saul Ewing combined with 50-lawyer Southern California firm Freeman Freeman & Smiley … Womble absorbed two small firms in both Northern and Southern California … And virtual law firm Scale brought on small Texas IP firm Creedon in the first of what it hopes may be a series of acquisitions.

Trump’s legal woes …
Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges he orchestrated a plot to try to overturn his 2020 election loss in what U.S. prosecutors call an unprecedented effort by the then-president to undermine the pillars of American democracy. Special Counsel Jack Smith, who has overseen the federal investigation, looked on from the courtroom’s front row as Trump entered his plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya. The next hearing is Aug. 28. On Friday, Trump’s lawyers dropped a second longshot bid to disqualify the Georgia prosecutor investigating whether the former president illegally interfered with the state’s 2020 presidential election. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the judge in Trump’s upcoming trial over his handling of classified documents made two key errors in a June trial.
Elon Musk’s X Social Media …
Messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and owner Elon Musk asked a Delaware federal judge to dismiss one of several lawsuits claiming they failed to pay promised severance to laid-off employees … The platform sued a nonprofit that fights hate speech and disinformation, accusing it of asserting false claims and encouraging advertisers to pause investment on the platform … In India, the company sought to quash a court ruling that it was not compliant with federal government orders to remove content … In a Paris court, AFP accused the platform of failing to discuss potential payment for the distribution of the news agency’s content.
Lawyers in the news …
Sean Edgett, a former general counsel at Twitter, joined California-based lab-grown meat company Upside Foods as its chief legal officer … Northwestern University hired former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to conduct an independent review as the school faces mounting lawsuits claiming harassment and hazing in its football program … Donald Trump ally Sidney Powell persuaded the 7th Circuit to rule that she should not be sanctioned for her failed lawsuit seeking to overturn Trump’s loss in Wisconsin in the 2020 presidential election … And who is Special Counsel Jack Smith in the Trump documents case?

It took Anastasia Wullschleger more than four years, two trips to a federal appeals court and one failed attempt to attract the interest of the U.S. Supreme Court, but she has finally pulled off a return to Missouri state court for her claims that pet food giants Royal Canin U.S. and Nestle Purina tricked her and other pet owners into buying “prescription” dog food that contains no medication. Alison Frankel explains why the 8th Circuit rejected defense accusations of jurisdiction gamesmanship and ordered the remand based on an amended complaint that stripped out all references to federal law.
