Law firm Stroock secures votes for pension buyout, easing merger path

Stroock & Stroock & Lavan has seen more lawyers decamp as the firm seeks to complete a merger. The firm’s chair restructuring and bankruptcy practice left with four members of his team to join Morgan Lewis after it lost a bulk of the practice to Paul Hastings last year. Plus, a group of 27 lawyers and eight business professionals exited Stroock to join Steptoe & Johnson earlier this year.

The firm and Nixon Peabody last month called off negotiation talks on a potential combination. Stroock has said it has continued discussions with other firms.

Stroock has now received the necessary votes from retired partners to move forward with a complete buyout of the law firm’s pension, which is around $6 million annually. Removing the pension obligation may help Stroock in its hunt for a merger partner.
